Got a job offer, meaning more money .... new car is finally not that far out. Tell me what you’d buy from these options. Its Friday and I’m really not in the mood to work.
Cars below here would mean keeping the Crossfire as a winter beater. More expensive because of insurance, but might be worth it.
New Miata with a warranty sounds nice.
Hopefully the Fiata isn’t too expensive.
Z4 looks good in and out, plus the hardtop would be nice in winter. CPO warranty?
Elise, shouldn’t need to say more.
C6’s 430hp V8 would make my ears happy.

I'd take the Miata but that's just me.

I’d buy the ‘vette but only because it’s the only one I’d probably be comfortable in.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:51 |

But what if the Fiata is better?!
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:51 |

Isn’t the answer around here always Miata?
But check out the S2000 in case you prefer it.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:51 |

Drop the comp/collision on the Crossfire and you may not see much of an increase at all if you’re paying comp/collision on it now. Like when my wife and I added a car to our policy it went up by $40/6months.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:51 |
|
Its hard to argue against the Miata.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:52 |
|
My only gripe against the Elise is, it can’t snow.
So I’d be keeping my Crossfire for winter duty.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:53 |

Definitely more livable than the others. But its a bit obvious for living in Detroit.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:53 |

Only car? No way I’d go Lotus as an only car for daily driving. ND Miata vs Z4 vs C6 would have very differing driving dynamics, and in many ways, is sort of the small, medium, large options (when talking about power). I’m partial to the Miata!
![]() 10/16/2015 at 15:54 |

My vote would be for the new Miata, I really need to go on a test drive spree this weekend

Corvette. Because plastic and V8.

I’m not seeing an option on here for “convert Crossfire to V12 Pro Touring abomination, DD bike”.

I actually have full coverage on it now, but I didn’t think about that. You sir have a very good point.

Why can’t the Elise do snow?
I’m in for the Vette, just be sure to go ‘08 or newer.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:00 |

Get a cheap hatchback daily driver and an NB with an LS3 swap
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:01 |
|
The S2000 has never been on my to own list ..... maybe thats because I’ve never even been in one. I should change that.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:03 |

Ha, V8s barely fit in Crossfires.
But you made me remember I do want a cheap bike for next summer.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:05 |

C6
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:06 |
|
Yes only car, unless I’d keep the Crossfire around because its not worth much anyways. I’d only do that for the really impractical cars aka Elise.
Its probably weird that I only want the ‘vette for the noise and not for the power difference.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:06 |
|
I agree on the test drive part .... I REALLY need to do that.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:07 |
|
But I want to daily RWD. RWD + snow = fun.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:08 |
|
I do miss hearing a straight piped V8 on the daily. Cant beat it.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:08 |

I want it .... only worried about age and putting on too many miles.

![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:10 |

Super low and midengined, Im assuming an elise can't do snow.
is ‘08 when they got bumped to 430hp?
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:10 |
|
The straight six it is then
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:10 |
|
Solution: Drive LS3 NB with snow tires.
Now that sounds like fun
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:12 |
|
A quick bit of MSPaint later, and I don’t think a V12 Crossfire is out of the question.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:20 |
|
Yeah, sorta, plus a host of other small changes. Better steering, bump to 6.2L from 6.0. The 430hp was with the performance exhaust I believe.
I drove a lowered Mustang with gears in the mountains of Colorado. Get some snow tires, don’t drive like a moron and you should be fine in any major city.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:20 |

You’re the first person to say Z4. I really like that car, might be alone in that though. Probably the best year round DD of the cars here.

Say it with me now...
Kermit, kermit, kermit, kermit.....
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:21 |

That does sound like fun .... but in my head you need a garage/shop to own a car like that.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:22 |

This is good oppo.
Also, holy penis car.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:28 |

Hold up, I want to change my vote
Clownshoe
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:29 |

I have a bit of a thing for inline 6s, an s54 is so sweet.
Also you clearly want a convertible, but want to drive in the winter which means you want a hard top so it’s perfect. Not the most powerful, or agile, but good looking and comfortable, a good dd if you don’t need lots of space.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:31 |
|
Not a terrible point. Will help that I’m in a parking garage and not street parking this year. I gotta test drive one.
Also yea sorry, Im not an expert on Corvettes. I respect them and I want a V8 and they’re reliable so I can’t rule ‘em out.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:32 |
|
Thought about putting a Boxster S in here .... they just seem expensive to maintain.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:35 |
|
I remember that StanceWorks post ... I can’t even.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:35 |
|
Hey now, it’s only expensive if you don’t lift a wrench to it.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:37 |
|
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:42 |
|
The Elise is hard to ignore, but yeah, probably the Mitata. Overall, it’s probably more reliable and will be cheaper to own.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:44 |
|
You have summed up my feels.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:44 |
|
I’ve ridden in one - never driven one. It’s a Honda, so it’ll be reliable, that’s for sure.
And there is a 6M S2000 on Relay Rides. Maybe next time I have to rent ....
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:45 |
|
Thats what has me worried about the mid-engined Porches. Not as easy to work on as the FR cars like yours. I don’t mind turning a wrench but how do you even get at the engine?
![]() 10/16/2015 at 16:49 |
|
I did quite a bit of research on them when I was contemplating getting on. Check the forums, but the package you want is the Z51 package. The code is in the glovebox IIRC. I’ll try and dig around on the forums as I received a pretty good answer.

You can’t track the ND without an aftermarket roll-bar (stock ones are too short and not strong enough), so that’s out.
Probably the same problem with the Fiat (unless they come out with a coupe, then that’s the one to get), so that’s also out.
I’ve driven a 6cyl Z4 and it was shit. The 4cyl turbo is so much better and makes fantastic noises. But it’s heavy and expensive.
Elise is a fantastic choice, frontrunner here. If it can’t winter, then you bought the wrong tires.
C6 is what I’d get if I couldn’t get the Elise.
That being said, if I was looking at cars at this price point I’d just get an E30 M3.
I’d also recommend both a Cayman or E9x M3 if you want something newer (for some weird reason), as they too fall in this price range.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 17:15 |
|
I’d stay away from the Z4. Even though it’s old and discounted, it’s still not a great deal. I’d look at the 228i or M235i (which both come in a soft top).
![]() 10/16/2015 at 17:18 |
|
Miata or Lotus. BMW is too heavy. Fiata can’t be better than the Miata. C6 is always great but is a totally different sort of car than the rest.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 17:22 |
|
By removing stuff to get to more stuff. :p
![]() 10/16/2015 at 17:26 |

Fiata. The Abarth and 4C have that Ferrari feel, and I trust Fiat will pull off the same trick with the Miata.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 17:50 |
|
I shall now forever call the Fiat roadster the “Fiata”
it is so clever yet I would’ve never thought of it.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 21:25 |

MX5/Miata.
![]() 10/16/2015 at 22:23 |

I would go... für Elise.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 03:27 |
|
Vette. No brainer.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 18:19 |
|
Begs the question, why didn't you get one?
![]() 10/17/2015 at 18:33 |
|
Roommate has an abarth, damn I want that engine/exhaust with rwd.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 18:34 |
|
Too many seats though, and I like the way Z4 looks over the 2 series.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 18:50 |
|
What if I don’t track?
So no NA I6, what about turbo 6?
Has anyone wintered an Elise? I’m about winter tires and rwd but that seems risky.
M3’s have too many seats. Rocking 2 seat life as long as I can.
Thought about putting a boxster s in here but I have preconceptions of it being $$ to maintain. That and not being able to work it myself (can’t get at the engine).
![]() 10/17/2015 at 18:52 |
|
Miata plus 1.4 turbo could be a better Miata.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 18:52 |
|
It's always the answer for a reason.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 18:53 |

Biased but educated comment.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 20:42 |
|
If you don’t track then damn! It’s fun! Try it!
They don’t make the NA 6 anymore I don’t think, The turbo 6 is the one I drove.
Good question about the Elise, could probably be answered by searching on Lotus forums and whatnot.
My family’s owned two boxes, and they’ve been bulletproof for the ~70k miles we’ve put on them combined. One was a 2005 987 that we put 60k on, and the other (which we have now) is a 2014 981 which has 13k on it. Neither has had any problems, just keep up with the regular maintenance and you’ll be set.
Though you’re right about the maintenance. To get to the engine the seats have to come out and/or you need a lift.
![]() 10/17/2015 at 21:50 |
|
Lol. If I had to describe myself in 3 words: ‘Biased but educated’.
![]() 10/18/2015 at 03:48 |
|
I don’t think they are going to go to the effort of a new powertrain, especially one that is otherwise only found mounted transversely. Additionally, I’m not sure more power would necessarily improve the well balanced driver’s car that the Miata is.
![]() 10/18/2015 at 11:04 |
|
But there is this mule:
http://jalopnik.com/step-inside-th…
Currently that engine makes 160-237hp so it not that much more powerful .... and really I just want the 500 abarth’s exhaust with RWD.
![]() 10/19/2015 at 09:59 |

Money. Decided to sink some money in my current car and make it faster. Then bought a bike. Lots of twists and turns

woah. Now that’s really interesting... Now I can’t wait...
